Once again, as part of the examining board of the Teacher Training Agency and Croatian Ministry of Education, it was time for the finals of the Annual National English Competiton for high school students, this year held in the Adriatic coastal city of Šibenik.
Budding young English language enthusiasts from every corner of Croatia gathered together in Šibenik at the Solaris Resort between 21 – 13 April 2015. The simple aim to is to become outright winners of the long-standing national competition in their own respective category. Learners ranging from 12 years old to mid-teens take part in the contest each accompanied by an English teacher from their school – otherwise known as mentors.
The competition starts six months earlier as each school nominates their strongest candidates through a standardized testing system. It then moves to a regional level to find the best in each county. Eventually, after lots of studying, revising and testing, the lucky candidates who’ll compete in the national finals are revealed, which this year takes place in Šibenik. Year on year, young people in Croatia continue to raise the bar with their English language skills and it’s always great to see such a positive group of learners especially in Šibenik.
This is now the 4th year I’ve been a part of the examining board with the Teacher Training Agency – Ministry of Education. Each year the location of the competition changes to another town or city as the host. More than 200+ learners and their mentors gather for 2 days in hope of victory, and of course a few days away from the daily routine.
Previous venues have included Vis, Makarska, Pula, Varzdinske Toplice, and Zagreb to name a few. Equally, I must admit, I always feel grateful to be a part of the selected examining board for the National Competition, of which I’ve been involved with since 2012.
